World Cup debutant Cape Verde ties Spain in tournament's biggest shock so far

Cape Verde stunned Spain in the World Cup on Monday, earning a draw against a tournament favorite in the teams’ opening match. Spain is ranked No. 2 in the world, while Cabo Verde is No. 67, and making its debut in the World Cup. Spain pressured Cape Verde all game — shot attempts were 27 to 6 in favor of the reigning European champions. But goalkeeper Vozinha stopped all seven shots that made it on goal. Cape Verdeans had gathered at Boston Logan International Airport two weeks ago to welcome the Blue Sharks to the United States for the tournament. The team isn’t playing in Boston, but the city and surrounding area has a large Cape Verdean population. The African island nation topped its qualifying group to become the second-smallest country, by population, to make it to a World Cup. Only Iceland, which played in the 2018 tournament, is smaller. “It’s a significant moment for our country,” said Ed Lopes, who was at the airport. &#8220

Looks like Shohei Ohtani is doing much better. Ohtani hit a leadoff homer for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday in his return to the starting lineup after being sidelined by inflammation in his left knee. He also walked three times and scored twice in a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. “I felt good waking up in the morning, I feel good now, so I’m pretty confident that I’ll be able to stay healthy and should be good to go tomorrow as well,” Ohtani said through a translator. The two-way star connected on a 1-0 fastball from White Sox right-hander Sean Burke for his 14th homer. The 409-foot drive to right in the first inning had an exit velocity of 109.6 mph. It was Ohtani’s fifth leadoff homer of the season and No. 29 for his career. “Obviously he’s the best player in the world, so anytime you can get the best player in a world back in your lineup, he’s definitely going to help and he showed it immediately,” teammate Mookie Betts said. Shohei Ohtani misses Dodgers' series opener against White Sox due to knee soreness

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is day to day with left knee inflammation. Ohtani was sidelined for Friday night’s 8-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. But manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani could play this weekend and remains in line to make his next scheduled start on the mound on Wednesday. Ohtani was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of Thursday night’s 8-6 win at Pittsburgh. “He’s doing fine today,” Roberts said before the series opener against the White Sox. “I think that we got some pictures. There was no findings. It’s just the normal wear and tear. I thought initially it was a hamstring, it was the knee. So it just kind of got upset, swelled up a little bit.” Ohtani, 31, is batting .305 with 13 homers and 40 RBIs in 67 games for the NL West leaders. On the mound, the reigning NL MVP is 6-2 with a 1.06 ERA in 11 starts. Ohtani had surgery on his left knee in September 2019. Roberts said the swelling is in the back of the knee. “That’s wh
