Nurses at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital vote to authorize strike

More than 1,200 nurses at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital in North Philadelphia have voted to authorize a strike as their negotiations with management continue for a new contract, their union announced on Monday. The union’s members voted 96% in favor of authorizing a strike, which gives leaders the ability to initiate one, but does not mean that a strike is imminent. In a press release, the union’s leaders said they have been working without a contract since April and are asking for improvements in nurse staffing and security, as well as a limit to cuts to benefits and departments. “We have a healing mission,” said PASNAP President Maureen May. “We want to heal our patients. We want to heal our community. And we want to be a part of healing a system that doesn’t always have our backs. That’s why we are prepared to take action—not because we want conflict, but because our patients and caregivers deserve better.”  NBC10 has reached out to Jefferso

Don Mattingly isn't ‘giving up' on Trea Turner during prolonged slump

It’s been a down year for Trea Turner. But the Phillies remain confident in their shortstop. He’ll bat second against the Marlins on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, despite questions about a potential reset day or a move down in the lineup. Don Mattingly said he did not give much thought to sitting Turner. “Well, I really didn’t think about it today,” Mattingly said. “So I really wouldn’t need deliberation at all.” The conversation around town right now centers on Turner, the 32-year-old shortstop who won the National League batting title last year and is now enduring one of the biggest slumps of his major league career. Turner is batting .219 with a .598 OPS through a league-leading 288 at-bats. His OPS is the seventh lowest among 156 qualified hitters in the sport. His struggles are reminiscent of his first season in Philadelphia. After a hot 19-game stretch in 2023, Turner spent the next 88 games in a massive skid. He produced a .217/.270/.350 slash line in

Phillies survive shaky late-inning bullpen work, win nail-biter in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – The Phillies displayed a little resilience in their 9-8 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night. In the wide-angle view, they bounced back from Friday night’s throttling at the hands of Milwaukee right-hander Jacob Misiorowski, who shut them out on one hit and 15 strikeouts. In the up-close view, they didn’t fret when starting pitcher Aaron Nola squandered a three-run lead in the middle innings. They rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth, another in the eighth and ultimately survived a rocky eighth inning in which reliever Brad Keller did his best to give it all away. “It was a wild game,” said catcher J.T. Realmuto, who had a big night with four RBIs. “That’s a good lineup over there. They did a good job fighting back. Obviously, it was closer than we would have liked it to be, but we found a way to win.” Manager Don Mattingly gave the ball to Keller with a 9-5 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Keller faced eight batters in the inning. He ga

FDA allows popular sunscreen ingredient long used in Europe and Asia

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday expanded its list of allowed sunscreen ingredients to include the chemical compound bemotrizinol. The change has been eagerly anticipated for years: Bemotrizinol has long been popular in Europe, Australia and some Asian countries. It also marks the first time in more than 20 years the FDA has permitted a new compound onto its sunscreen ingredient list . Why the excitement? Bemotrizinol is a UV light filter, meaning it blocks out harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. To be most effective, these filters need to be broad-spectrum, meaning they block UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause aging and wrinkles while UVB rays cause sunburn, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Both contribute to skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. UV filters come in two formats: mineral or chemical. The mineral sunscreens — which contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide — block both UVA and UVB rays, but often leave a

Wilmington residents try grassroots traffic safety fix at crash-prone corner

Residents in Wilmington are testing a traffic safety measure they hope will make a dangerous intersection safer and eventually lead to permanent changes. With permission from the city, neighbors spent a whole day cleaning, taping off and painting part of the area around Lancaster Avenue and Connell Street as part of a temporary project known as daylighting. Daylighting improves visibility at intersections by preventing vehicles from parking closest to corners, making it easier for drivers, pedestrians and others using the roadway to see one another. Organizers say the temporary project is only supposed to last for a few days. Afterward, they plan to survey neighbors to determine whether residents believe it improved safety. Neighbors say this intersection has long been a concern because vehicles often travel fast down Lancaster Avenue, making it difficult for drivers on Connell Street to safely see oncoming traffic when turning onto the avenue. “This is local.
