Garage fire in Bay Terraces neighborhood displaces 10 people

San Diego Fire is investigating a garage fire that displaced ten people in the Bay Terraces neighborhood Sunday afternoon.   “This is the most that I could salvage,” Clarence Elder told NBC 7. A jewelry box with watches is one of the very few belongings Elder was able to recover from the fire. He was among ten people who were inside the home when the fire broke out. According to San Diego Fire, they responded to a call about a garage fire at around 2:30 p.m. in the 700 block of Bullock Drive in the Bay Terraces neighborhood. San Diego Fire said the fire may have started with a lithium-ion battery that was charging. “I heard a pop and then I looked and my e-bike battery was smoking. My girl she tried to move the battery and when she moved it, it just exploded,” Elder said. Clarence and his friends don’t know what’s next, but they’re grateful they have each other. “Thank God we’re alive though, thank God, everybody made it out,” Elder said. San Diego Fire

San Diego Padres win 4th straight, take series from Rockies

San Diego Padres fans probably did a bit of a double-take when they saw their team’s starting lineup for Saturday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies. Batting second, playing 2nd base, was Fernando Tatis Jr. Yes, THAT Fernando Tatis Jr., the Platinum Glove-winning right fielder who has played all of one Major League inning at the keystone and last started there with Double-A San Antonio in 2017. Tati has been taking ground balls at 2nd base in pregame warmups for most of the season but it wasn’t clear if that was just for fun or a hint he might be occasionally moonlighting as an infielder again. It was the latter, and the change might have done him and the Padres a world of good. Tatis Jr. handled the few defensive chances that came his way and had three hits for his best offensive performance of the season in a 9-5 win, their 4th straight victory and 3rd straight series win. San Diego starter German Marquez had a few early issues against his former tea

Holy Sheets! Clad in new City Connect jerseys, Padres walk off Rockies again

The San Diego Padres new City Connect jerseys looked great on the field. The result on the Petco Park scoreboard looked even better. The Friars donned their new Dia de los Muertos uniforms for the first time on Friday night and did the same thing they did on Thursday night, walking off the Colorado Rockies. Less than 24 hours after Xander Bogaerts hit a 12th inning grand slam, Gavin Sheets hit a 3-run blast in the 9th to give the Friars a 5-2 win and sent a jolt of elect4ricity through yet another sellout crowd of 42,454 in San Diego’s jewel of a downtown ballpark. Of course, a lot happened leading up to that memorable moment. Walker Buehler either really loves the new uniforms or he is figuring things out. The righty made his best start as a Padre, tossing 6.0 innings of shutout ball. Buehler allowed three hits, struck out four, didn’t walk a soul, and did it all in a tidy 67 pitches to earn his first San Diego win. Gavin Sheets made a little history in the 5th in

PHOTOS: San Diego Zoo welcomes newborn red-tailed monkey

Say hello to the new resident of the San Diego Zoo, a baby Schmidt’s red-tailed guenon newborn monkey and its first-time parents. These playful primates are known for their vibrant colors, graceful leaps and cheeky charm. After spending time indoors to bond, the newborn and first-time parents Janga, 5, and Jack, 6, are now visible to guests at their Ituri Forest habitat on Hippo Trail. The word “guenon” comes from the French word for monkey. Native to western and central Africa, guenons are also expert foragers, using their cheek pouches to store extra food, sometimes as much as their stomachs can hold.

Get out those umbrellas — rain is on its way to San Diego this weekend

The weekend weather will be welcomed by gardeners and others in San Diego, with rain in the forecast off and on. Friday got off to a start with clouds and patchy fog, though, which then gave way to sunshine around the county. However, light showers will develop late Friday night into Saturday as a storm approaches. Despite starting Saturday with precipitation, the sun is expected to return in the afternoon. A stronger wave of moisture is expected from late Saturday night all the way into Monday with moderate rainfall, colder air and widespread rain. Any thunderstorms that develop could produce brief, heavier showers, lightning and small hail. Preliminary rainfall totals from both waves or wet weather look to be about a half inch, as of Friday morning The weekend is expected to be cooler, with temperatures dropping below normal. The coolest days will be Sunday and Monday, before we gradually warm up late week into next weekend. Light showers may linger into M

“Bogey goes boom!” Xander Bogaerts hits 12th inning walk-off grand slam to top Rockies

Xander Bogaerts hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 12th inning and the San Diego Padres snapped the Colorado Rockies’ four-game winning streak with a 7-3 victory on Thursday night. Bogaerts sent a 1-0 pitch from Valente Bellozo (0-1) out to left field for his ninth career grand slam and his second with the Padres. Fernando Tatis Jr. laid down a sacrifice bunt to begin the 12th, moving automatic runner Jake Cronenworth to third. Bellozo intentionally walked Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado to load the bases before Bogaerts’ shot. David Morgan (1-0) retired all five batters he faced to get the win after coming in with two on and one out in the 11th. Cronenworth threw out Willi Castro at home on a grounder to second base to keep the Rockies from scoring in the 12th. Castro went 0 for 5 with five strikeouts. Brett Sullivan had an RBI double in the 11th to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead, but Luis Campusano tied it with a two-out double. Tyler Free

Germán Márquez throws five shutout innings for first win as a Padre

Germán Márquez is a winner with the San Diego Padres. The right-hander pitched five effective innings in Monday night’s 5-0 victory at Pittsburgh. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one in his second start with his new team. It was his first win since June 18 for Colorado at Washington. “It’s been a while, man,” Márquez said. The 31-year-old Márquez is trying to rebuild his career with San Diego. He won a spot in the team’s rotation after agreeing to a minor league deal in February. Márquez spent his first 10 seasons with Colorado, going 68-72 with a 4.67 ERA in 200 starts and three relief appearances. He missed most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to Tommy John surgery, and then struggled in his final year with the lowly Rockies. Márquez went 3-16 with a 6.70 ERA in 26 starts in 2025. He recorded his first win of last season on May 11. Colorado finished with a 43-119 record, setting a franchise record for losses. Márquez dropped his fi

Cal Fire gearing up for peak fire season on heels of hot, dry conditions around the county

On what was yet another dry and hot day in San Diego, Cal Fire Captain Mike Cornette took NBC 7 to an unincorporated area of Escondido. The Welkview Truck Trail, located off Deer Springs Road, is typically gated off to the public. Cornette said this area is where crews have been making a fuel break over the last several months. It’s one of several fire prevention efforts underway across San Diego County ahead of peak fire season. “I would say the entire county is in fire danger,” said Cornette. “We will move in to peak staffing here within a few weeks to a month or so,” Cornette added. Cal Fire is in the process of bringing on about 1,000 firefighters that will be spread out across their 42 fire stations, three fire centers, and two air bases across the county. San Diego Christians mark Easter with prayers for peace as war in Iran escalates

As the war in Iran intensifies with no clear end in sight, Christians across San Diego County marked one of their most sacred holidays Sunday, celebrating Easter with prayers for peace and renewal. Easter Sunday commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion — a cornerstone of Christian faith symbolizing hope, rebirth and new beginnings. At Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Logan Heights, parishioners gathered for worship and sacraments, including baptisms that underscored the spiritual meaning of the day. The Rev. Hung Nguyen told congregants the message of Easter resonates in every aspect of life. “In our joys, our sorrows, our struggles, God is saying trust,” Nguyen said. “You look amazing, you look beautiful,” he told the congregation Sunday during the mass delivered in English. For many, the day brought a sense of emotional release and renewal. “I feel like a weight has been lifted. I’m happy,” said Julianna Morales, a

Fernando Tatis Jr. salvages his day, helps Padres beat Red Sox

One of the great things about baseball is you’re always just one swing away from having a great day. San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out in each of his first four at-bats against Boston Red Sox pitching on Saturday afternoon. But, in the top of the 9th inning, against closer Aroldis Chapman, the All-Star outfielder found one good swing. Tatis Jr. lined a 113-MPH double to centerfield, with two strikes no less, and scored on an RBI single by Ramon Laureano to give the Padres a 3-2 win and, at least temporarily, avoid losing their first three series of the season. San Diego starter Randy Vasquez was in line for a win with another great start. Vasquez tossed 6.0 innings of one-run ball. Through his first two outings of 2026 he’s gone 12.0 innings with a 0.75 ERA. His offense got just enough to give him a slim lead. Bryce Johnson brought home the first run of the game with an RBI groundout and Freddy Fermin added a run-scoring double in the 3r

Pivetta bounces back, Padres avoid sweep with 7-1 win over Giants

Nick Pivetta shrugged off a disappointing Opening Day start, and the Padres avoided getting swept – beating the Giants 7-1 to close out their season opening homestand. Ramon Laureano belted his second home run of the season in the eighth inning, a two run shot to punctuate the win. After giving up six runs in three innings to the Tigers, the ace of the Padres 2025 staff was in control from the beginning against San Francisco. Pivetta struck out eight in five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks. Pivetta struck out Patrick Bailey to leave two stranded in the second inning, before striking out the side in order in the third. The righty did not allow another hit after surrendering a leadoff single to Luis Arraez in the second inning. Craig Stammen’s team tallied the first run of the game in the opening frame. San Diego State product Casey Schmitt was charged with an error at first base when he failed to bring in a throw from Matt Chapman to reti

Adames launches leadoff homer and finishes with 4 hits as Giants back Webb in 9-3 win over Padres

Willy Adames had four hits, including a leadoff homer, and San Francisco ace Logan Webb finished strong in the Giants’ 9-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Adames sent Germán Márquez’s second pitch for the Padres over the left-field wall to spark a three-run inning with his first home run this season. Adames also doubled and delivered an RBI single that ignited a four-run sixth after San Diego cut it to 4-3. Matt Chapman hit his first homer — a solo shot in the third for a 4-0 lead — before Webb ran into trouble in the bottom half. He walked Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado with one out. Jackson Merrill and Miguel Andujar had RBI singles sandwiched around a run-scoring groundout by Xander Bogaerts, but that was it for the Padres as they fell to 1-4 before a fifth straight sellout crowd. Palm Sunday procession brings music and a message of inclusion to Bankers Hill

Christians around the world marked the beginning of Holy Week with the celebration of Palm Sunday. In the Bankers Hill neighborhood, parishioners at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral made sure their presence was both seen and heard. A procession of parishioners carrying palm fronds circled the cathedral before the mid morning service, accompanied by the rhythm of whistles and samba drums echoing through the streets. The Very Rev. Penny Bridges, who leads the congregation near downtown said, “We are not afraid to be seen in public as Christians. We wake up the neighborhood and let them know St. Paul’s is here for them.” The procession reflects the biblical account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem — a moment Christians commemorate one week before Easter. Parishioners walked just blocks from where thousands had gathered the day before for a “No Kings” rally, but participants said their purpose was different. “Christ sits on the throne of heaven beside God, and that’s who we’re

Padres shut out Tigers to get 1st win of 2026

Early in the 2026 season there are two large mysteries Padres fans were curious to get answers about: what do the new City Connect jerseys really look like and what is Mason Miller’s entrance song? The first one will be revealed in early April. The second one was unleashed on Saturday night. Miller came out to “Blind” by hard rock legends Korn, then proceeded to strike out a pair of Detroit Tigers hitters to lock up a 3-0 win, giving the Padres their first victory of the season. Starting pitcher Randy Vasquez was tremendous. During Spring Training the right-hander showcased increased velocity. In 2025 his fastball averaged 93.5 MPH. In Cactus League play he was sitting at close to 96 MPH and in his first regular season start he showed that was not a fluke. Vasquez struck out eight and allowed just two hits in 6.0 shutout innings and got just enough offensive support to earn himself a win. Merrill's amazing catch wasted as Padres lose second straight to Tigers

Before we begin with the results of Friday night’s game between the San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers, if you haven’t seen it yet, just watch this catch by Jackson Merrill. It’s the second game of the year and we already have a Catch of the Year candidate. Merrill leaped well over the wall in right-centerfield to rob Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle of a home run in the 2nd inning (can we say Merrill used some defensive wizardry against McGonigle?) and giving 44,896 fans at Petco Park a thrill. Alas, it went to waste as San Diego’s vaunted bullpen stubbed its toe in a 5-2 loss, dropping the Friars to 0-2 on the young season. Manny Machado led off the 4th inning with a double, moved to 3rd base when Merrill legged out an infield single, and came in to score on another infield knock by Miguel Andujar to put the Padres up 1-0 against Detroit lefty Framber Valdez. After giving Merrill a round of applause for his highlight reel catch, starting pitcher

New apartments open in Convoy, marking first homes ever built on Convoy Street

Community leaders in San Diego celebrated a new housing complex in the Convoy District on Thursday. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of the “Alexan Camellia” apartments. It marks the first time people will be able to live on Convoy Street. Local leaders say this will help round out a community that has served as a hub for Asian businesses. According to Mayor Todd Gloria, this is the first of many new home developments coming to Kearny Mesa. These kinds of developments will help bring down housing costs, Gloria said. Alexan Camellia offers 531 units, including studios and one and two bedroom apartments. They range between $2,800 to $4,400 per month.
