Cerne Abbey in Cerne Abbas, England

Founded in 987 AD by the Anglo-Saxon nobleman Æthelmær and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539, the abbey was converted into a private manor house and has remained in private hands ever since. Unlike the dramatic ruins found at Fountains or Rievaulx, Cerne Abbey is a working estate, lived in, cared for and quietly extraordinary. Two medieval buildings survive in remarkable condition. The Abbot's Porch, completed around 1509, is a three-storey Tudor gatehouse with carved royal heraldry, a two-storey oriel window and an original spy hole through which the porter would screen arriving visitors. The 15th-century Guest House, one of the few surviving monastic guest houses in England, once received Queen Margaret of Anjou during the Wars of the Roses. Private guided tours are led by the family who have called the abbey home since 1978, offering access to buildings and stories that no guidebook contains. Tea is served in the courtyard afterwards, which feels entirely appropriate.

Alaska’s glaciers have a startling response to rising temperatures

Alaska’s glaciers are proving to be highly sensitive to warming temperatures. Using radar satellites to monitor more than 3,000 glaciers, researchers found that every 1°C (1.8°F) increase in average summer temperature extends glacier melting by about three weeks. The study also revealed that intense heat waves can strip away up to 28% more protective snow cover, exposing ice much earlier than normal and accelerating ice loss.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is many things. But a weather and traffic guy? The mayor’s office announced this week that Mamdani would host a regular show, “The Morning Pitch,” to update New Yorkers on traffic and weather for match days at NY/NJ Stadium. There are eight of them. Mamdani kicked off his new venture on Thursday to coincide with the World Cup started. The first match at NY/NJ Stadium (formerly MetLife) is this Saturday between Brazil and Morocco. A Knicks jersey under his suit jacket, Mamdani said, “You give us 5 minutes, we’ll give you the World Cup.” Mamdani reiterated, as he has publicly said many times, that the city is prepared for the anticipated crowds and ready to implement traffic changes planned long ago. He said some agencies have spent years preparing. The mayor says he wants to help New Yorkers prepare, too. “Before every match held in the tri-state area, I will speak directly to the people, as I am now, t
