People with diabetes are twice as likely to have depression, a charity backing tailored support says.
Steph Richards' endometriosis charity work was criticised by former Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
A new national cohort study provides important insights into the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The study shows that long-term disease-free survival rates are significantly higher than previous standard indicators suggest. The results, published in The Lancet Regional Health Europe, are based on the analysis of data from 1,299 adult patients treated between 2005 and 2021. The study was in collaboration with researchers from the clinical tuberculosis infrastructure (ClinTB) at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB).
Egg freezing is becoming increasingly popular, yet most people who freeze their eggs never return to use them. When imposed storage limits are reached, individuals must choose whether to discard unused eggs, donate them to others for reproductive use, or donate them to research; although many say their preference is to donate to research, actual donations remain rare, leaving a valuable resource largely unused for scientific progress.
An increasing number of fungi are becoming resistant to medication, posing serious risks for patients with weakened immune systems. That is why 50 researchers from around the world, led by Radboudumc, are calling for action against drug-resistant fungi. Their call has been published in Nature Medicine.
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA), made from many copies of ribosomal DNA (rDNA), is the core component that powers ribosomes—protein-building machines in our body. It helps build proteins by linking amino acids together, and can also fine-tune this process by interacting with other proteins and messenger RNA (mRNA). For a long time, scientists assumed ribosomes were more or less identical within a species. A new study in Cell Genomics is challenging that idea.
Food calorie labels on menus in cafes and restaurants can be helpful for people with binge eating disorders, even aiding their recovery, finds new research from UCL and King's College London. For the study, published in BMJ Public Health, the researchers surveyed 1,001 people aged 16 or over who lived in England and had experienced disordered eating. Since 2022, all restaurants, take-aways and cafes in England with 250 employees or more have had to display the calories of the food and drink they sell on menus, online menus and take-away platforms as part of measures to curb obesity and encourage healthy eating.
For over a century, standardized rating scales have been the dominant method of psychological assessment, but they often limit how people express complex or nuanced mental states. A new study introduces an approach that combines large language models with traditional psychometric tools to screen for depression. The research is published in the journal JMIR Formative Research.
Anxiety itself is not a mental illness. It's a normal, adaptive emotion that helps us respond to perceived threats. Anxiety is the automatic reaction that makes you jump back when you think you've seen a snake while bushwalking—before realizing it's a stick.
We're keeping an eye on new influenza and SARS-CoV-2 viral variants. Here's what we know about those viruses—and your immune system's ability to fight back.
A study using tiny retinas grown in a lab has revealed how subtle changes in a key growth-controlling protein can lead to a condition causing serious eye defects from birth. The findings, published in the journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA)—Molecular Basis of Disease, shed new light on ocular coloboma, a rare congenital eye condition affecting about 1 in 5,000 births and responsible for roughly 10% of childhood blindness. Coloboma arises when a structure in the developing eye, the optic fissure, fails to close properly and often co-occurs with other tissue-fusion problems such as cleft lip and/or palate.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are used across industries, and are present in waterproof clothing, makeup, carpets, upholstery, cookware, fast-food containers, and myriad other items we encounter in our daily lives.
Researchers from the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE) and other partner institutions of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) have now identified a previously unknown function of the PICALM protein in skeletal muscle: The protein responds sensitively to physical activity and intermittent fasting. It also plays a decisive role in the formation of new muscle fibers.
Advanced liver disease (ALD) occurs when significant scarring causes the liver to lose function. Patients with ALD often have serious health challenges but have limited access to palliative care that could improve their quality of life. A new multicenter trial led by Manisha Verma, MD, and Victor Navarro, MD, at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital demonstrates a new approach that could potentially transform access to palliative care for patients with ALD and address a major care gap. The research is published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
Scientists at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and an international team of collaborators have used a genetic sequencing technique called whole exome sequencing to discover a new rare genetic disease. In a paper appearing in Human Genetics and Genomics Advances, the researchers have published findings that identify the faulty mutated gene. By exploring the biochemical consequences of the mutation, the investigators also showed that this typo in the genetic code interferes with normal cellular function, as expected of an unknown congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG).
