High heat and humidity, chance of pop-up showers and storms later today

High heat and humidity are in play today. Temperatures will be on either side of 90 degrees. But with added humidity bumping in, it’s going to feel hotter than that. The heat and humidity trigger instability in the atmosphere and increases our chances of pop-up showers and storms later today. The storm threat starts first in western Massachusetts and the Berkshires later this afternoon. That energy then moves eastbound. But as it does, it fizzles out. And as the sun goes down, we’ll lose the extra energy that charges up some of these storms. Still, later tonight there’s another shot at storms bubbling up. Across New England, we’re in a level 1 of 5 for a few severe storms to fire up today. Heat advisory Thursday-Friday for some The heat and humidity keep at us on Thursday. There are heat advisories in effect from noon Thursday to 8 p.m. Friday for parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont. The heat index, for some, will climb into the upper 90s

Storm Team4 Forecast: Storms making their way into DC area

4 things to know about the weather: Grab the umbrella Rain & storms likely Isolated severe storms possible Sweltering Thursday & Friday Storms with gusty winds, heavy rain, thunder and some lightning are making their way into the D.C. region Wednesday afternoon. Radar showed a line of storms hitting parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland west of D.C. as of about 3 p.m. The risk for severe weather is higher for Thursday and Friday, since temperatures will be considerably higher those afternoons. Highs Wednesday will get close to 90°, but Thursday and Friday will be in the mid to upper 90s. That said, here’s an important distinction between Thursday and Friday: Thursday will come with quite a bit more sunshine and less coverage area for the afternoon storms. That more scattered nature means that any storms that do develop Thursday are more likely to turn severe. Area-wide thunderstorms are much more likely Friday, as a cold front presses into
